About Varicose & Spider Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging veins that appear blue, red, or purple in color. They are usually found on the calves or thighs. Symptoms of varicose veins may include itching, burning, and throbbing around the affected area. For some people, varicose veins may not cause any serious health problems but if the vein becomes red and swollen, bleeds, causes extreme pain, or a rash appears around the vein, these are causes for a doctor visit. Varicose veins may also be removed for cosmetic purposes if the appearance is causing you upset. The causes of enlarged veins are either weakened or damaged valves in the lower body due to age, obesity, heredity, and other factors.

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, or venulectasias are similar to varicose veins but they are much smaller and look like branches or spider webs. They are closer to the surface of the skin but do not generally bulge like varicose veins. Spider veins are usually found on the legs or face. About 1/3 of the female population suffers from spider veins, compared to just under 1/3 for men. This condition is usually simply a cosmetic concern but in some cases, may cause discomfort and/or numbness in the legs or could be a sign of a more serious health problem.

Several factors can contribute to vein disease. Individuals over the age of 50 are more likely to develop varicose or spider veins. Changes in hormone levels during puberty & pregnancy, as well as changes from the use of birth control pills can also cause varicose or spider veins. Obesity and/or lack of movement may eventually cause varicose veins, and heredity also plays a huge role. Your condition can be improved by making simple lifestyle changes. Compression stockings cover your legs, putting positive pressure on them and helping them to pump blood back up to the heart. Your doctor may also recommend exercise which increases blood flow. It is also helpful to elevate your legs after sitting or standing for long periods of time. If these methods do not seem to help, there are medical treatments to remove unwanted veins. This may include injecting the vein with a solution in the case of sclerotherapy, but there are laser treatments which are also available as in the case of endovenous laser therapy. These treatments are minimally invasive and do not require surgery.
