Compression stocking are a non-invasive, inexpensive treatment for varicose veins. These stockings, also known as compression hose or compression socks, help the blood flow more efficiently through the veins of the legs, where varicose veins commonly occur. When the blood flows unhindered, symptoms like leg heaviness, achiness and swelling can be relieved. Compression stockings may also stop the progression of varicose veins, although they are not effective in removing bulging veins that have already appeared.
Should I Wear Compression Stockings?
A patient with any sort of vein or circulation problem, including varicose veins, may be a good candidate for compression stockings. Because many issues with the circulatory system can become worse if left unchecked, compression stockings are often a good option for slowing the progression of such disorders, so a doctor and patient can determine whether additional treatment may be needed. In the case of varicose veins, compression stockings are often just one step in a treatment program that may also include a procedure to remove veins from the leg entirely.
Compression stockings are only available by prescription, so talk to one of our doctors if you think compression stockings might be the right choice for you. The socks are not usually recommended for patients with diabetes, smokers, or those with a decreased blood supply in the legs. The stockings come in three different sizes, so nearly everyone can find a proper fit.
How do Compression Stockings Work?
Varicose veins are the result of blood pooling in the legs, which leads to a dilation of the veins that carry blood back to the heart. Compression stockings apply gentle pressure to the lower legs and ankles, decreasing pressure in the veins and promoting better blood flow to the heart. When the pressure goes down, symptoms like heaviness, numbness and swelling are relieved.
While compression stockings are not effective in reducing the appearance of varicose veins on their own, they are often used with other vein treatments to achieve better results. For example, patients might wear compression stockings after sclerotherapy to prevent the reappearance of varicose veins.
How are Compression Stockings Used?
Compression stocking are long socks that usually reach up to the knee or thigh. The fit much tighter around the foot and ankle, and gradually loosen as they move up the leg. The stockings are typically put on in the morning and worn throughout the day. Because of the tight fit, it takes a bit of practice to get used to putting on these specialized socks. Some patients find that an application of silicone lotion helps the stockings slide on more easily.
In addition to treating varicose veins, compression stockings are often used for the following:
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Circulation problems during pregnancy
- Post-treatment for conditions like edema and venous ulcers
- Post-surgically to prevent blood clots during recovery
