Microphlebectomy

Varicose veins can become more than just a cosmetic issue. Larger varicose veins may cause symptoms like swelling, heaviness or discomfort in the legs. Microphlebectomy is a procedure used to treat larger varicose veins and thus, eliminate many of the painful symptoms associated with them. It involves the removal of surface veins through tiny incisions in the skin. The procedure is completed at our vein center, using a local anesthetic and mild sedative. The procedure has been used for varicose vein removal for some time, and is considered minimally invasive and relatively safe and effective.

Is Microphlebectomy Right for Me?
The right candidate for microphlebectomy has varicose veins near the surface of the leg that need to be removed for medical or cosmetic purposes. The patient should be in relatively good health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Microphlebectomy does not work as well for patients who cannot walk on their own or wear compression stockings after the procedure for any reason.

Since local anesthetic is commonly used for this procedure, patients who are allergic to local anesthesia medications will need to talk to one of our doctors about their options. Our experienced staff will meet with you, take a complete medical history and conduct a thorough physical examination to determine whether microphlebectomy is the best choice for you.

What is the Procedure Like?
Microphlebectomy is performed right in our vein clinic, using a local anesthetic and mild sedation if the patient requests it. The vein locations are marked prior to the procedure using an ultrasound, so the doctor knows precisely where to make the incisions to remove the veins. Tiny incisions, or “stabs” will be made at the appropriate locations, and a small hook is used to capture the vein and remove it through the incision. Incisions are generally so small; no stitches are required and minimal scarring results. A dressing is usually placed over the incision until it heals completely.

The entire procedure may take less than an hour to complete, depending on the number of veins to be removed. Compression hose are worn after the procedure and the patient is advised to remain quiet for about 24 hours.

What can I Expect Afterward?
Patients should plan to take a full day off after the procedure to facilitate the healing process and prevent complications. You should keep your legs elevated as much as possible during this time and compression stockings should be worn as instructed. Some patients experience mild discomfort, bruising and swelling, which can usually be managed with over the counter medications. Compression hose will also help to reduce pain and swelling after the procedure. Patients will be instructed to come in for a follow-up appointment one week after treatment, to remove the compression dressing and check the incision sites.

Is Microphlebectomy a Permanent Solution for Varicose Veins?
Because varicose veins are completely removed during microphlebectomy, it is considered a permanent solution to the problem. However, the procedure does not prevent future varicose veins from appearing, and subsequent treatments may be required if additional veins occur.

Microphlebctomy is a minimally invasive, relatively safe way to say goodbye to your unsightly, painful varicose veins for good. To find out if microphlebectomy is the right choice for you, contact Varicose Vein Surgeons to speak with a member of our staff or schedule an appointment.
